Wine tasting in Woodbury this Saturday

The Woodbury Wine Cellar

On Saturday September 28, residents and members of the booming business community in Woodbury can stop into Woodbury Wine Cellar at 7973 Jericho Turnpike between 2 and 6 p.m. for the Grand Portfolio experience, “Wines from Around the World.”

Woodbury Wine Cellar is located next to Starbucks in the Woodbury Village plaza, alongside Scout & Molly’s Boutique and Iavarone Brothers and around the corner from Naot Footwear. The Wine Cellar has been in business for 10 years. Owner Radhika Khanna has recently joined as a member of the Syosset Woodbury Chamber of Commerce.

“We’re really happy in Woodbury. People who shop here are very nice, they care about our small businesses. This shopping center is also so unique among Long Island shopping centers, with stores offering great quality and variety. We carry wine from small vineyards and boutique products that are ‘the right price’ wines, unique bottles that overdeliver in value. The wines we offer often become that piece of conversation for a dinner party or event,” Khanna said in an interview on September 19.

At the Tasting this Saturday, eight vendors are set to offer wine tastings, pairings with food and details on their wine-making processes. “Each of our vendors will bring over at least 4 or 5 wines. During tastings, they will explain and offer samples of wines and products, and people can stop in to us for hors d’oeuvres,” Khanna said.

Woodbury Wine Cellar offers more than an eclectic variety of wines. Khanna says the market for wine and liquor along Long Island’s North Shore communities, and in other New York City suburbs, has trended towards tequilas and bourbons in recent years. Customers are enjoying the selections at the local small business, which carries plenty of labels they may not find elsewhere.

“Tequilas and bourbon products are on fire right now. Everyone really loves these, and to satisfy the market we have brought in bourbons from upstate New York distilleries. We also have bourbon from all across the nation — we also bring in varieties of whiskey. What we always here from people that they have never a selection of bourbons and tequilas like we carry in-store,” she said.

Word has spread about the Woodbury Wine Cellar’s great offerings. With 50 people in attendance at the September 19 Chamber of Commerce meeting, Chamber President Charo Ezdrin announced the special wine tasting event “where you can sample over 30 exquisite wines.”

Khanna said annual Chamber membership will help promote her store and reach new customers. In the past she’s supported Chamber events, but now as an official member she plans to network and collaborate with area professionals.

The new specialist at Woodbury Wine Cellar is Antonio “Tony” Dela Cruz, who has 32 years of experience in the wine business, having worked in Garden City Park for two decades and most recently at Stew Leonard’s in East Meadow.

“Tony is really knowledgeable about the wine market and other specialty products, from gin to rye. Every customer or merchant that knows him has had good things to say about him,” Khanna said.

The Woodbury Wine Cellar event marks the successful conclusion of two fierce and festive weeks for Chamber of Commerce activities, with the well-attended Syosset Street Fair September 15, grand openings and ribbon-cuttings at SuperSlow Zone wellness center in Woodbury on September 23 and at GrabSuite offices on Tuesday, September 24.
